Community Hunting for a Cause in Acadiana

Every fall, hunters across Acadiana gather for a day that blends tradition with purpose. Teams set out on their own land, each pairing a veteran with a seasoned hunter to track and harvest feral hogs that threaten crops and habitats. The effort not only reduces the animal population that causes about 76 million dollars of agricultural damage in Louisiana each year, but also builds a supportive circle around our veterans.

When a hog is taken, its weight is recorded and the animal is skinned for a practical second life. The meat is then distributed to food kitchens, families in need, and the veterans themselves, ensuring that the harvest feeds the community that helped make it possible. This direct link from field to table reinforces the idea that hunting can be a sustainable, charitable practice.

Proceeds from the tournament flow to the Fredrick Hebert VFW Post 4158, Hero Hunts, and other programs that aid veterans. In a state where about 23 veterans a day are lost to suicide, every contribution-whether a shared story, a measured hog, or a quiet moment of camaraderie-helps to remind those who served they are not alone.

The event stays true to its roots: a warm, respectful gathering where the focus is on stewardship, fellowship, and giving back. For hunters, veterans, and volunteers alike, it’s a reminder that a shared purpose can turn a simple hunt into lasting support for the community.
