Hunting feral hogs on private land helps protect crops that lose an estimated 76 million dollars each year in Louisiana. When a team of hunters and a veteran bring a hog down, the first step is a quick, humane kill and an accurate weight check, which determines how much meat will be available for donation.
The hog is then loaded onto a clean, insulated trailer and taken to a designated processing site. Volunteers trained in safe handling remove the hide, clean the carcass, and cut the meat into portions that meet food‑bank standards. All tools are sanitized and the meat is kept cold throughout to preserve quality.
Once packaged, the meat is delivered to participating food banks in the region. Staff at the banks store the packages in freezers, label them with date and source, and then distribute the portions to families in need, senior centers, and sometimes directly to veterans who helped on the hunt.
The whole process turns a problem animal into a resource, reducing agricultural damage while providing nutritious protein to the community. It also gives veterans a tangible way to serve, connect with nature, and see the direct impact of their effort.
By linking hog control with food‑bank donations, the program supports both land stewardship and the well‑being of families and veterans across Acadiana.
