When a team of hunters steps onto their land in Acadiana, the goal is clear: remove a feral hog that threatens crops and wetlands. Each hunt includes a veteran partner, honoring the tradition of service while tackling a problem that costs Louisiana roughly 76 million dollars in agricultural damage each year.
After a successful shot, the hog is quickly secured and brought to a designated processing area. Trained volunteers weigh the animal, then carefully skin and eviscerate it according to state health guidelines. The meat is then chilled on site to preserve quality before being loaded onto a refrigerated truck.
The refrigerated transport carries the hog to a regional food‑bank hub, where staff inspect the meat, trim any excess fat, and package it for freezer storage. This process turns a destructive animal into a valuable protein source for families facing food insecurity, and the same meat is also shared with the veterans who helped bring it in.
By turning a pest into a pantry staple, the tournament not only protects farms but also supports a community that includes veterans-people we know lose about 23 lives each day to suicide. The effort reflects a shared commitment to stewardship, service, and giving back.
