Sharing the Harvest: How to Donate Wild Game Properly

Hunting season in Acadiana brings more than trophies; it brings a chance to feed families, food kitchens and our veteran community. When a hog is harvested, the weight and health of the animal become a resource that can help offset the $76 million in agricultural damage Louisiana faces each year, while also providing a meaningful way to honor the service of our veterans.

The first step is clean handling. After the animal is field dressed, remove all hair, blood and internal organs, then wash the meat with clean water. Store it in a cooler with ice or a refrigerator as soon as possible. Many local health departments require that donated meat be inspected or at least meet basic safety standards, so check with your parish office before you transport the game.

Next, label the package with the date, species, weight and the name of the donor. This information helps food banks and veteran assistance programs track inventory and ensure proper distribution. Troops & Tusks works closely with local kitchens and the Fredrick Hebert VFW Post 4158 to match donations with those who need them most, and they can help you navigate any paperwork.

Finally, remember why we do this. Every day, about 23 veterans are lost to suicide in this country. By sharing the harvest we create a tangible link between the land, the hunt and the people who have served. A simple act of generosity can turn a hunting trip into a source of nourishment, community support and a reminder that we all have a role in caring for each other.
