Why 23 Veterans a Day Drives the Feral Hog Tournament

Every day, about 23 veterans are lost to suicide in this country. That stark number is the heartbeat of the feral hog tournament, reminding us that the event is more than a competition; it is a response to a crisis that touches families across Acadiana.

By inviting a veteran onto each hunting team, the tournament creates a space where camaraderie, purpose and the rhythm of the outdoors can replace isolation. Working the land they know, veterans share the responsibility of protecting their property while finding a renewed sense of belonging.

The hogs taken off the fields not only reduce the estimated $76 million in agricultural damage each year, they become food for kitchens, families and the veterans themselves. Proceeds flow to Fredrick Hebert VFW Post 4158, Hero Hunts and other programs that provide counseling, job training and peer support.

Each successful hunt is a quiet tribute to the 23 lives lost daily. It signals that the community will not stand by, but will turn action into hope, one hog and one veteran at a time.
