At Troops & Tusks we ask every hunting crew to bring a veteran. The rule is simple: a veteran’s presence is part of the mission, not an optional perk. It ensures that the day’s work benefits the community, the land, and the men and women who have served.
Veterans often find the outdoors a natural place to heal. The focus of tracking and harvesting a hog can break the cycle of rumination that contributes to the roughly 23 veterans a day lost to suicide in this country. Being part of a team gives a clear purpose, a sense of belonging, and a chance to share skills with people who respect their service.
Hunters also gain. A veteran’s experience in discipline, safety, and teamwork raises the standard of every outing. The shared effort improves hog control, which matters because feral hogs cause about 76 million dollars of agricultural damage in Louisiana each year. When a veteran and a hunter work side by side, the hunt becomes a partnership that benefits the land and the local food kitchens.
If you are looking for a veteran to join your crew, start with your local VFW post, the Fredrick Hebert VFW Post 4158, or any nearby veteran service organization. Explain the day’s schedule, safety plan, and the role the veteran will play. Offer a respectful environment, listen to any accommodations they need, and treat the partnership as a two-way exchange of support.
